One of the best options is to choose the undergraduate course in Applied Languages. You can find the webpage of this course here: http://www.port.ac.uk/courses/modern-languages-and-area-studies/ba-hons-applied-languages/

You will study at least two languages from French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin) or English as a Foreign Language. The degree includes a year abroad in one of the countries where your main language is spoken. You also have the opportunity to study the first semester in one country and the second in another one. For example, if you study French and German, you will have the possibility to study 6 months in France and 6 months in Germany. This is a unique experience that provides you with a better understanding of the languages and cultures that you are studying. It is also a strong point in your CV that increases your chances to get hired after graduation.

This degree offers you the possibility to study translation and interpretation, but at the same time it gives you the chance to use the language in a range of professional contexts such as teaching, tourism and finance. This will help you stand out in an incredibly competitive global job market by obtaining the language and professional skills that are appreciated by employers.

If you are 100% sure that you want to become a translator, the best option after the undergraduate course is to take a Master in Translation. This will offer you a strong theoretical background and a balance between translation skills and technological competence. For more information about the Master’s degree you can visit their website here: http://www.port.ac.uk/courses/modern-languages-and-area-studies/ma-translation-studies

During your studies at the University of Portsmouth, you will benefit from the help of staff and teachers. They are really appreciated by students for their involvement, enthusiasm and availability. You are welcome in their office for guidance or a chat about your course and different difficulties you might interfere with during your course. From my own experience, I can say that at the University of Portsmouth, I received full support and understanding from teachers, which helped me progress a lot, both personally and professionally. What I also appreciated, is the correctitude and respect that I’ve been treated with, as well as the detailed feedback for my work.

As an advice for future students, I can’t stress enough the importance of computer skills in translation. Try to focus on languages and IT related classes equally, as you will inevitably need this when you get a job. Also, try to get involved in a wide range of activities. The University of Portsmouth offers many possibilities, but you are the one that needs to search for them and get started. Opportunities won`t find you, you have to find them.

All in all, I recommend the University of Portsmouth for those who want to study languages. You will develop in a professional environment that gives you the chance to acquire all the skills necessary to succeed as a translator. The key is to study hard and get involved in relevant activities to enhance your CV.
